Terpsichore, according to Greek mythology was one
of the nine Muses; the sisterhood of goddesses who
acted as patrons of the arts. In creating this version of
Terpsichore, the muse of choral song and dance, Dalí
uses a double image, setting the soft carnal muse
against the hardened statuesque one. In both cases,
the face is not clearly defined in order to underline the
purely symbolic significance of these gracious figures.
The dancer with the smooth, classic form, represents
inner harmony and the subconscious, while the other
cubist figure represents the chaotic rhythm of modern
life, from which we see branches sprouting,
symbolising rebirth and regeneration. Both figures
dance side by side within each of us, one
representing grace and a balance of emotions, and
the other the vibrancy of life.
